Here, for the first time in over a year, is the first part of the Star Trek: Kirk vs Picard script by Eric D. Webb (salacious_scribe), “The Guardians of Forever,” from the contest presented by CBS Interactive and the now-defunct Fanlib.com. EXT. SPACE – THE FINAL FRONTIER
Over the following visuals we hear Kirk’s V.O. The camera tilts
down from the blackness of space to show a reddish planet, home of
The Guardian of Forever. An immense storm rages on the planet
sending stray bolts of energy and temporal shockwaves into the
atmosphere and out into space. Above the planet in orbit The
Enterprise NCC-1701 comes into frame just in time for one of the
shockwaves to hit the ship. Even with the shields absorbing most
of the impact the ship is still visibly shaken.
Captain’s Log: Stardate 3471.4 The
Enterprise has been ordered to
investigate a report of temporal
disruptions emanating from the system
where we discovered The Guardian of
Forever, nearly five years ago.
The camera dives past the ship and down into the atmosphere coming
out of the storm near the surface, leveling out and skimming the
edge of a ruined city before settling on an area where three
figures are beaming in.
I had hoped never to return to this
place and to leave those painful
memories – memories of her – buried – in

The storm rages overhead, as Spock leads the way, tricorder in
It’s hard to believe.
What’s that, Dr?
That Starfleet just left this thing out
here for anyone to find.
Keeping it secret has been the priority.
Building a base or assigning a patrol
would draw too much attention.
Almost seems better to just destroy it.
Spock pauses for a moment, lowering his tricorder, and turns to
Doctor, I am surprised at your eagerness
to destroy such an important life-form.
Don’t you see, Spock? The risk is just
too great. Nevermind what the Klingons,
or the Romulans might do if they found
this place. Just one ambitious man,
driven to change his fortunes, could
transform all of history.
No doubt many will find it if we don’t
figure out what is causing these time
distortions. Let’s go.
Phantom shapes, like ghosts, begin to appear around them.
They appear to be afterimages in time –
beings from the past that once walked
here. (beat) Apparently harmless.
They move into the heart of the ruins and toward The Guardian of
Forever – a monolithic living machine that serves as a gateway
through time and space. Without warning – a blinding flash of
energy emanates from The Guardian shaking the ground and sending a
shockwave up through the storm. They bring their gaze back down
only to find that the surrounding ruins have been fully restored –
beautiful columns supporting multi-leveled structures adorned with
spires, all infused with a power coursing through the veins of the
These images must be…
…billions of years old.
Just as they begin to examine the splendor of the long-dead
civilization, another flash of energy strikes out, this one even
more violent than the last, throwing them back. In a matter of
seconds we see billions of years of weather and erosion decimate
the buildings returning them to ruins. Getting up and approaching
The Guardian they observe more phantoms moving through the
landscape including some familiar faces.
What the hell?
They witness another Kirk and Spock entering the gateway. Before
fully disappearing the other Kirk turns back to look at his future
Our past selves, entering the gateway to
travel back in time in attempt to rescue
That other me, he turned back as if he
could see us.
I observed that as well. It could be
that my earlier theory was incorrect.
My previous assumption was that these
images where echoes of past events.
It seems that things are far worse than
I suspected. The Guardian’s malfunction
appears to be causing different periods
in time to intersect… and interact.
If that happens, then the damage to the
timeline would be devastating.
Indeed, it would be likely that reality
as we know it would cease to be.
Well, before we all disappear from
existence, let’s try talking to the big
rock in charge.
They approach The Guardian – pulsating with random flashes of
light as cascading images from all of time flicker in and out,
miniscule cracks glowing on its surface.
Guardian! Do you remember me?
Remember? There is nothing to remember.
All is present and one.
Are you malfunctioning?
Time is fluid. The constant has shifted.
Do you know the cause of your ailment?
The layers stripped away. The threads
have become entangled. The end is
Are you dying?
I… AM… FOREVER!!!
Another blast of energy erupts upward into the atmosphere. After
the three men regain their balance, Kirk’s communicator chirps.
Captain, the impact of the distortion
waves is draining too much power. The
shields are failing. We need to get you
back here now.
Understood, Mr. Scott. Beam us up.
INT. ENTERPRISE – BRIDGE
Kirk and Spock enter the bridge and take their usual places.
Lights are flickering on and off as a result of the power drain.
We can’t generate enough power to
compensate for the drain.
Alright. Get us to a safe distance.
(To Mr. Sulu)
Mr. Sulu, lay in a course, full impulse.
At that moment the ship goes dark.
We’ve lost main power. Emergency systems
Lights and monitors slowly flicker back to life.
Captain, I am detecting another massive
temporal shockwave. Impact in 10
I have nothing, sir!
Helm not responding, sir!
Brace for impact!
The shockwave impacts the ship.
Reports still coming in. We have some
hull buckling along the port nacelle. No
word on injuries.
More bad news?
That impact significantly altered our
orbit. Unless we can regain engines
within the next 20 hours, the ship will
burn up in the planet’s atmosphere.
Mr. Scott, how long before we can
I don’t know, sir. That last impact
fried most of the power relays we had
left. Structural integrity fields are
barely holding up as it is.
What about using the shuttlecraft to

Another shockwave, heading our way.

decompression alert. Evacuate all outer
compartments. Seal all bulkheads behind

The ship has a Federation transponder

Can we get visual?
The screen blares static that slowly dissipates to reveal a galaxy
class starship – The Enterprise NCC-1701 D.
INT. ENTERPRISE-D – BRIDGE
The camera pulls back from the viewscreen and the image of
Enterprise to reveal the crew of the Enterprise-D, Capt. Picard,
Cmdr. Riker, Lt. Cmdr. Data, Lt. Worf, and Counselor Troi.
